Ms Julie Ockerby

As CEO & Principal Creative Director of award winning interior architectural firm, Meli Studio Australia, Julie is an Australian leader and mentor in entrepreneurship, an advocate for the inclusive diversity including gender and age, a maverick in the development of spaces that are an extension of life for the world’s ageing population. Julie is on a mission to transform the burgeoning seniors living market in Australia & South East Asia by championing higher excellence in eldercare. Driven by a passion to reinvent the aged care space, she is an ardent advocate for the elderly and their built environment. She has changed the design expectation for Aged Care in Australia and is determined to continue to push the boundaries until it is a globally recognized concept. With a background as a Registered Nurse and having worked in marketing & business development for boutique hotels in Europe, Julie saw a need for change in the way the aged are cared for, and by 2013 had shifted the company focus to aged care. Her background as a nurse gave her insight into the practical functionality of an operational facility, while her work with boutique hotels informed the style of environment she advocates. Julie’s purpose is to reinvigorate Aged Care Living. With over 15 years’ experience, Julie has worked with some of the most innovative designers and hoteliers from around the world and has translated this experience into the Aged Care and the Retirement Living industry. Combining her background as a Registered Nurse together with her experience in the boutique hotel industry, Julie’s approach is unique. She has transformed the Aged Care Living industry for the better by pushing the boundaries and is determined to achieve better outcomes for our ageing population. To attain these outcomes Julie and her team work closely with architectural and construction partners to ensure design elements have a point of difference in each project. Julie has become a highly regarded thought leader and advisor in the seniors living design industry, where she has been recognised as a change agent. Julie holds Bachelor degrees in Nursing, Business, and Arts in Interior Design. Julie is also a recipient of the Women in Business Gold Stevie Award for ‘Female Entrepreneur of the Year, Australia, NZ, & Asia 2018’, as well as the ‘Trailblazer Award at the Asia Pacific Eldercare Innovation Awards 2018” and she is a quadruple finalist in the APAC Eldercare Innovation Awards and the Australian Women in Construction Awards.
